Just for the record, here's what I'm using and getting successful
compiles.

Redhat 7.1, kernel 2.4.9-6 on an AMD K6/2-500 with 256MB ram.
GCC 2.96-85, glibc 2.2.4-19, Qt 2.3.0-3, SDL 1.2.2-1.
I'm also running Ximian Gnome 1.4 here with whatever updates to various
libraries it does via it's Red Carpet packet manager.

I know that everyone out there is probably using some different
distribution of Linux (I think I've counted 8 or more so far as reported
on this list), but the basic framework of what I've listed above should
probably give good results for most people. My problem wasn't so much
in compiling the programs, but getting them to run afterwards. Turns
out that the GCC 2.95.x version I was using wasn't building a file that
my system liked. I upgraded to GCC 2.96 and everything started working
fine.

So my suggestion to anyone else who is having problems getting the
avifile CVS package to compile would be to check the versions of your
packages against what I have listed and possibly upgrade any that are in
need of it. I know this won't work for everyone, as each computer
system is different, but at least then we might have a common base to
start the troubleshooting from.

Just my thoughts on the subject. Comments welcome; flames can go to
/dev/null. :-)
