that's ok - we just want to be compiled with newer autoconf.
But - for Debian testing you may try one thing -
remove generation of .ac links in autogen.sh and
check what happens with you configure avifile again - does it help ?
Maybe Debian Testing is broken more then I've thought
(I'm always running unstable)
But Potato definitely works - I've checked personaly few hours ago...
