Unfortuneately, the previous version of gcc on my system (egcs-2.91.66)
fails to compile avifile as well:

make[2]: Entering directory `/home/klevin/src/avifile-0.6/lib/aviread'
/bin/sh ../../libtool --mode=compile g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I.
-I../../include   -I../common -Wall -Wno-unused  -g -O2 -march=i586 -pipe
-c AsfFileInputStream.cpp
g++ -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I../../include -I../common -Wall -Wno-unused
-g -O2 -march=i586 -pipe -Wp,-MD,.deps/AsfFileInputStream.pp -c  -fPIC
-DPIC AsfFileInputStream.cpp -o AsfFileInputStream.lo
