Well - what kind of graphics display do you use ?
Is this new problem (e.g. aviplay played fine previously) ?
Other player are OK (mplayer, xine, ...) ?
Maybe it's some kined of "feature" of your XFree instalation -
I've seen some similar problems with notebooks - and Xv hardware acceleration.
Maybe try to disable Xv rendering (just be sure direct is on and
buffering is disabled - otherwise a lot of cpu power is needed just
to copy images in memory)
