It's funny, but I looked at the output from configure and determined that 
even with the ./configure --with-qt-dir=/blahblahblah/blah/qt-2.3.1 it was 
pulling from the 3.0 version I'd downloaded and half-heartedly installed for 
no reason. I've learned the lesson now however and won't be upgrading kde 
again until redhat puts out a new distro ;)

Apparently QT3.0 breaks binary compatibility with the old version so headers 
and libraries won't work from different versions (which seems herculian to 
have ever worked in the first place) but I was able to compile other 
applications fine in the setup I had before.

What I did to fix the problem was put the line in the .bash_profile, and also 
specify where the libraries and headers were seperately on the ./configure 
line.

I'd point it to the older version of QT if I were you... but that's just my 
penny-ass talking. I'm a newb so do what ya want, 'ya hear'
