well - count the number of people who are commiting into CVS of mplayer.
then do the same with avifile...

2.
also as I said - if something needs documentation then we are doing
something wrong
(Ok the API for library is missing - but as I'm still quite unsatisfied
with the current version and I know it will be still changed, I'm saving
time... -  the source is the best documentation you could have anyway)

3.
I don't see the point to cut&paste lines from mplayer manual or
Xfree man pages/doc or HOWTOs'  so user would know how to use Xv, X11, gcc, 
or any other project (after all they all have mplayer already installed :)
so they have surely read all the doc in there...)
(there still has to be something about aviplay :) that users are still
using it :)
