Really ? you can't compile rpm on SPARC ? why ?

In any case, relink seems like a good idea, but there are cases where
source installs just don't make sense.

Also, in your case, there is no way to optimize for physical disks where
you put stuff.  E.g., you'd want to put your mail spool files and mysql
database files on fast hard disks (/var), while other things should not.
These are issues I come across at work.  But in some cases relink seems
like a good idea.
