Hmm I got it working already with the latest CVS. BTW it seems the
RedHat Beta doesn't have GCC 3.1.1 but 3.1. It still stops with the same
line. After compiling that peace without -fPIC it works.

    forget you would gain somothing from this step - the parts which
    had to be running fast are already optimized with hand-written assembly
    and the rest of the code isn't really important - and
    Mandrake's gcc-3.1.1 moreover seems to contain some weird bug which
    needs yet another free register for PIC code...
