Well, this sounds exactly like the problem I reported few days ago - seg
fault on startup when compiling/running on SuSE 8.0. Bug no 650611 on
sourceforge's avifile site.
There might be a general problem compiling avifile on SuSE 8.0.
So, you are saying that 0.7.16 worked? Might give it a try if I find it.
