it's a bad idea to build RPMs with included avifile.spec file.
Distribution is made for standalone compilation.
configure --prefix=/var/tmp/avifile
make install
- this should work
everything else is pure luck :) if it's working
usually Debian package building should be working as well..

I think for this case - main autogen should be used with '--clean' option
But as I've said I'm not RH developer for this moment so you should
ask some experinced RH user/developer how to solve it.
meanwhile you might use aviplay for local compilation
(btw this way you could have multiple versions installed at the same time)
