As with other recent patches to vcr (an app no longer maintained by its creator), the updated version (binary and source, of course) is available ONLY as part of Debian Sid (Unstable).
As to the question you (Zdanek) asked on the avifile Web site ... my concern is that avifile remain usable with vcr until someone develops a better video-capturing app that uses standard codecs. ffmpeg and mencoder both appear to meet the "standard codec" need, but neither includes all the other features that a good video-capture program needs (like the ability to select the source and channel on the TV-cap card, the ability to adjust sound level, and the ability to pre-specify recording time). The recording portion of MythTV appears to manage capture quite nicely, but it uses a modified NuppelVideo codec that standard codecs cannot decode. If there are other choices avaaiable (aside from dvr and avirec, the other front ends for libavifile), I am unaware of them.
While vcr is not ideal, it really is not bad for capture, especially for automated capture run through cron. I'd very much like to see avifile let it survive.
