Sounds like CMake can do all but distinguish between user and root.
Like I said, there is more than one way to do this. I was pointing out
the method I use which I find to be very efficient and have used
successfully since well before this was added.

Does it even work on Windows? I develop on all three platforms, and so
expect my tools to work on all three.
