Follow-up Comment #1:

I ended up implementing a slightly different algorithm: if
the port name provided doesn't match any of lpt1/2/3, try
interpreting as the address.  If that works (i.e. the entire
string can be converted into a number), use it.

I don't think there's any point in mentally restricting the
feature to just PCI cards; back in the old ISA days, there
have been cards around that could be jumpered to various
"odd" addresses as well.
