Follow-up Comment #5, patch #7486 (project avrdude):
Actually avrftdi is a device type, like the parallel port driver. Any number
of 2232 based programmers can be implemented off of this, just like the myriad
parallel port drivers - all have to go through the parallel port & drivers.
avrftdi is the generic form, and I've implemented a 2232HIO based on the
avrftdi.
