Maybe I can chime something here ;-)

A camera that will take 5 images simultaneous and stitch in realtime does exist
to create a fully immersive video. Here is a link to the site.
http://www.ptgrey.com/products/ladybug2/index.asp Unfortunately it costs
$10,000.00 USD. :-(

There are other ways to create images from a normal camera for example check
out this website:
http://www.gigapan.org/ & http://www.gigapan.com/ - They built a robotic system
that uses a simple camera to create very big Panoramas. They don't accept
images under 50M pixels.
I don't know the price for this system.

I use a different system Canon 450D with a Fisheye lense and a Panorama head on
a tripod to create an Equirectangular image. I then use Pano2VR from Garden
Gnome http://www.pano2qtvr.com/
To extract the Cube faces from the Equirectangular images. It would cost you
approx. $5000.00 if you had to buy all the gear to get started. But you should
be able to do it for under $3000.00 if you buy cheaper equipment and software.
