I think the main point about 3D in FP10 is that yes, rendering
triangles natively will be a bonus (as will pixel bender shading), but
rendering triangles is only a small part of what a 3D engine actually
does. Depth sorting, shading, interactivity, loading models,
manipulating models, animation, running effects etc etc... there is
still a need for  a well-organised framework that does all of this
stuff.

Did DirectX or OpenGL make gaming 3D engines obsolete?

Essentially, what it means is that PV, Away and whatever else will be
able to swap out their triangle rendering code and concentrate on
features that make those triangles kick ass and pleasant to develop.
