Hi everyone,
Thanks for the helpful suggestions. Someone on the FlashDevelop forums
told me to compile with the Flex SDK (this means create an "AS3
Project" instead of "Flash IDE Project" in FD).  Using Flex it
compiles in like 4 seconds. So yes, Li, you are absolutely right...

I am loving FlashDevelop, it's really lightweight and gets all the
code completion and syntax highlighting right.  Anyway, I'm sure I'll
be posting here again as I make progress.
