Ah, well this part is going to have a steeper learning curve than away3D
probably. Away3D will allow you to render and manipulate 3D objects, the
camera, etc. To create the 3D mesh there are many apps, from the expensive
professional Maya, to some great open source apps like Blender (and many
inbetween). I've gotten into using Blender because it's free, but the
learning curve is at least a couple of weeks worth of heavy duty tutorials
to get up and running with basic modeling and texturing. www.blender.org has
a ton of great information. There are other 3d modeling tools out there and
probably many blogs you can find comparing and contrasting them.

Google offers a more simple 3D modeling app called SketchUp, but be warned
that there was recently a discussion on here about difficulties in importing
the sketchup models into Away3D.

You'll find a lot of different opinions on which is best, and I'm not one
with enough experience to guide you here, but here's somewhere to start
reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_computer_graphics_software
But by all means, do some searches on google to read some blogs and reviews.
Any package you pick is going to require some learning. As a student you
might find one of the better packages available to you at an education
price, which might make it worth starting up with one of those tools.
