hi I had similar issue with loading obj and linked mtl file. Obj model
loaded ok but mtl wich was in the same path as .obj file didnt.
Solution was to specify parameter mtlPath in init object like this :
Obj.load( 'subfolder/file.obj', { mtlPath : 'subfolder/' } );
The structure of folders looks like this :

   main.swf
   subfolder/file.obj
   subfolder/file.mtl
   subfolder/texture.jpg
