So the amount of gain (if any) will depend on the specifics of your project,
but you will get the best performance by doing the following with your
textures:

Make sure your textures are a power of 2 in each dimension.  Use the
smallest texture dimensions you can get away with.  Use as few textures as
you can, and atlas them if practical.
