Thanks Katopz! I can't take all the credit for the explosions. The After Effects guys at work rendered them up for me as a bitmap sequence. Then it was just a case of creating two plans and coming up with a way to make them always face the camera and not look wrong.
An earlier version had translucent water so you could see the islands disappear into the blue, but we started to get slow downs once we put in all the explosions.
