Your assessment isn't far off. Lite simply offers better performance by limiting the amount of unnecessary calculations. Things like z- sorting and more expensive materials are left out so that it can smoothly render as many faces as possible.
The long and short of it is that you should probably use lite (especially if you are doing mobile dev) unless there is functionality that you absolutely need in 3.6.0.
