I assume you're talking broomstick (away3d 4.0 alpha).

At this point, trial and error have been my only guide. There isn't a
definitive status documented anywhere for each filetype/parser. The
examples serve as somewhat of a guide, but the samples themselves
contain a lot of fixup code to get them to act the way the authors
wanted.

I currently apply a material after the fact when I load things from
any parser. (MD5, for instance, or my own Collada parser). It's
ghetto, but it functions.
