This part actually doesn't make sense to me, I have the AS script in the same folder and if I try to open the AS file directly I get the same "Open File" dialog that i do with any unknown file type. The AS file is parsed by the SWF file correct and therefore the 3DS file is parsed by the SWF engine in a different fashion than say a PHP file which is parsed server-side by PHP.
