If its just 2D acceleration you are after then i would highly recommend
checking out M2D by Ely Greenfield - it is built for 2D and would most
likely serve your requirements better:

early days but the library is already showing a lot of promise. Why leave
GPU accelerated graphics to the 3D crowd? ;)
