I have tried that, diffuse + specular on the light + material
properties too
but the effect is not as good as playing with alpha 0 / 1 on a black
background.

The main goal of a 3D engine is to simulate the way we see the world
around,
when there is not light, it's just ... black

But it's very useful to see something during development :-), adding a
global
mode for lights could be interesting :

normal mode : like now / release mode : no light = black
