We used to have tag switches bound to "mod4 + 1", "mod4 + 2" etc. Then someone 
complained:
  "I am using a weird keyboard layout and the number keys aren't in-order. Can't you 
use keycodes instead?"
And so we did:

  "I'm not using your 'standard' keyboard. For me, keycode #7 maps to something 
completely different."
(Can't find a link for this right now and we didn't revert to keynames (yet?))

What I am saying is:
Keyboard layouts exist for a reason. Trying to work around them causes problems for 
everyone who has a different "physical" keyboard layout.

What is wrong with using the keyboard layout for the key bindings in awful.menu?
