This really is a bug in the WM, so no point in mailing Marc. Also thanks for reminding me why I wanted to use ARGB visuals. When you run awesome with "--no-argb" (which does the exact opposite from what its name implies), the transparency will work again. Bug is FS#837. (Technically, the transparency is working fine.
