Under Linux, I would use "xterm -e strace -o /tmp/strace.txt /bin/sh" or "xterm -e gdb /bin/sh" to figure out more. First command would hopefully produce a short file which says something like "sh was killed by SIGWINCH" (hm, SIGWINCH isn't deadly...). Of course only if the started shell dies again and the window closes.
