Ha! That did it, thank you Nikos! I completely missed a URxvt option in
~/.Xdefaults. Just for the record: The offending XResource was:
> URxvt.borderLess: true
which the urxvt manpage explains as
> borderLess: boolean

Pretty useless in a tiling window manager anyway. Now everything is
fine. Great :-)
