hi!
If you want to use awesome, you have to live pretty much on the edge
when it comes to libraries (ie., their versions) required to build
awesome. On my own computers, I can just install whatever libraries I
like (or just use the unstable package from my distribution), but when
it comes to using the newest awesome version on different machines
(where I don't have root access) I am stuck.
One idea of mine was to just compile awesome statically, so that I can
copy the file between all the computers I use (they all run on the
same architecture). I started to do this, but ran into problems
compiling imlib2 (this problem seems to be known, the errors look like
this: /usr/bin/../lib/libxcb-xlib.so.0: undefined reference to
`_xcb_lock_io'). I tried to convince imlib2 not to link against this
library, but I didn't succeed.
I also tried using "ELF statifier" to build pseudo-static ELFs by sort
of glueing the libraries loaded at startup together with the
executable, but with kernel stack randomization this always segfaults
and without randomization (which I cannot disable without root
privileges) awesome doesn't start up, either. So no option.
Long story short:
1.) Is it even possible to build a working static-linked awesome, ie
an ELF I can copy to whatever x68-machine I like and run without
problems? (The main problems I see here is: does a different Xlib
version mean awesome cannot communicate with the X server?)
2.) If so, can you point me in the general direction how to do this or
3.) Can you maybe even provide such a statically linked ELF?
Any help here is appreciated.
Greetings,
Julius
