Will newer versions of awesome work without an X server? Will newer secure logins work without any kind of authentication? Will newer computers work without electricity? Will newer humans work without food? cairo-xcb never changed its state. It's been what it is for years now. Only some idiot at ArchLinux decided that enabling the cairo-xcb backend breaks firefox (which it does not do!) and thus went rampage.
