You can start gnome-panel or gnome-control-center. On my
configuration, starting gnome-panel breaks quite a lot because it is
not ready for tiling, so I have to expand/unexpand it using
alt+rightclick.

In any case, instead of killing unity and starting awesome, you should
try to have awesome start automatically instead of unity.
