Hello,
It's late for answer to you, but I've done similar task recently, and
I only modify my ~/.gnomerc telling about a script in /usr/local/bin,
as explained in the Awesome wiki for Gnome <3.4 (see
http://awesome.naquadah.org/wiki/Quickly_Setting_up_Awesome_with_Gnome#Configuration:_3.0_.3C.3D_gnome_.3C_3.4),
and all is working well :-)
