I set up a brand new ubuntu box on friday. Got Axis2 building with
JDK1.4,JDK1.5,IBMJDK1.5, JROCKIT 1.5.

Jogging my memory...here are some tips:
- Don't set anything in MAVEN_OPTS (just try it out)
- Make sure u add the bc provider as mentioned in the FAQ
- In JDK1.4, drop latest xalan and xerces in endorsed directory
