(newbie) libxml2 dependencies

The taglibs I'm trying to install requires a later version of libxml2 than
the one that came with my suse 8.0 install. So I got the latest rpm (2.4.27) I
could find. This however says it needs glibc 2.3.
I'm a newbie coming from a windows background so I'm looking for some guidance
here. As far as I can tell upgrading the c libs is a pretty big deal
Does it involve replacing the c runtimes, gcc stuff and breaking everything that relies on the
previous version?
Basically I'm looking for a workaround to avoid anything that complicated.
Do versions of libxml2 >= 2.4.20 but <=2.4.27 still use glibc 2.2
