This is (basically) what I did (I used the debian unstable version of xerces, and used the path to its build directory). The docs state that xerces >= 2.1.0 is needed, and that they use 2.2.x for testing. Maybe it really needs xerces >= 2.2.x. I'll try as soon as I find time.
