It's not the perl they ship that causes problems for lots of people, it's the default UTF-8 locales. Perl 5.8.0 interprets a UTF-8 locale as a signal to treat all file opens as UTF-8, unless otherwise stated. This behaviour causes too many problems, so will be disabled in 5.8.1. A workaround is to set your locale to something else, like en_US or even C. I hope that fixes it for you. Otherwise, I know you don't want to hear this, but AxKit works in Debian (and is packaged there).
