Hi Maria,
I only know about obits in the United States. I have looked in California at obituaries were my Great Grandparents 1st appear in the United States and if you can find an obituary alot of times they list the names of there children and or brothers and sisters and were they lived.
But I have only gotten back to the 1880's in California and I think you are looking further back then that. And in the Azores which I haven't gotten to.
After I find the obituary if I am looking for a female sometimes it will list the females married name in the obituary for the person you were looking for. Then you can look for that married female to find her family and so on and so on.
When I find the obituary then I find the PROBATE or WILL and order it. When I get the probate or will it sometimes will list the names of the children. Even the married names of the female children and that will help you track the children looking for obits, probates and wills.
I hope this helps you.
Kim

Oh, so that is why looking up the Obits is helpful. I've not looked up any obits in the past. The big thing is to be able to read it.
I would like to find the obit of Marianna Joaquina who died before her son Antonio Jose was married in 1824. I think I have that in the drawers at the FHC.
Great day!

Hi, On the obit the priest wrote that he was a "poor beggar". I wonder if they did move around, because non of the children marry in S. Maria.See, so the night ended great, you just never know! How did you know he was a beggar, (poor beggar) did some certificate say that. Yes, it is horrible. Then you mentioned that they had children in different places and oved around. So I wondered if Francisco Jose and Engracia Rosa were moving around also as you mentioned.
Well, I see that you have had your frustrations with the ancestors and that, fortunately, there are other who are also so helpful.
Thanks, I'll go to page 92 to find the marriage.
Long day, but a good day.

Hi Maria, The reason I called them infamous, was that I had such a hard time finding them. John (JR) from the list found Simao mentioned in Ponta Garca, George found a birth in Vila Franca. I was constantly complaining about them. When Simao died in Santa Maria, and he was not only a beggar, but he was a poor beggar. Guiomar also died as a beggar in Santa Maria. Horrible since their children were living in the same village at the time.Well, I found Francisco Jose married to Mariana Joaquina in the Index. It does say Mariana. They are on page 92. I looked for her father Antonio Lima and Feliciana S. Jose marriage. It isn't in S. Pedro. I'll check births.----- Original Message -----From: Maria LimaSent: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 9:41 PMSubject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Name of Church in Gloria, Santa MariaHi, Theresa:
What's the story of the infamous couple and what does poor mendicants mean. Mendicants, is that beggar? Gypsy? I don't know, just guessing.
Interesting that Marianna was married in the Church of Sao Pedro and not the one where her parents were parishoners. Who knows!
So glad you're looking up the indexes. I saw a gentleman today at the FHC making copies of a film on a "memory stick" or whatever you call it; and it's free so you can copy the film on that. I thought that was a great idea. You just need to hog the machine or be there when no one else is there, which is difficult.
You have been so helpful, as everyone else on this list; I feel like I am moving forward (backwards?) in little leap years.
Regards,
Maria Elena

Surprise, Surprise!! I have all the indices from S. Pedro here. I'll look at some of them tonight and finish in the AM. I'll let you know what I find. Theresa----- Original Message -----From: Theresa EntinSent: Wednesday, August 20, 2008 8:56 PMSubject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Name of Church in Gloria, Santa MariaJohn, this looks like a hit. What is the relationship in distance to the two parishes, S. Jose and S. Pedro? This is what the baptismal record says is Antonio Jose, born in 1803, to Francisco Jose and Mariana Joaquina, of the parish of S. Jose. He is the son of Francisco Jose and Engracia Rosa of NS das Candeisas, the island of Santa Maria. I did find a Francisco Jose and Engracia Rosa in my records in Santa Maria. It also states Mariana Joaquina from S. Jose, the daughter of Antonio Lima and Feliciana Sao Jose from the parish of S. Jose. Antonio Lima is from NS das Neves from Relva.Engracia Rosa is my line, and the line of the infamous Simao Velho and Guiomar Gomes, who died as poor mendicants in Santa Maria. They are the people who traveled back and forth having children, in Vila do Porto, Santo Espirito, Ponta Garca, and Vila Franca. Never very long in one place. So I wouldn't be surprised if Francisco Jose and Engracia Rosa traveled back and forth also. What is also unusual is that I have Francisco and Engracia's children being born in Santa Maria, but none of the marriages for their children. So this record looks pretty good to me. TheresaThis will probably not help but I have a Maria Joaquina of S. Pedro, Ponta Delgada, daughter of António José de Lima and Felícia de S. José, both of the same parish, married in S. Pedro on 23 Feb 1800 to Francisco José of S. José-Ponta Delgada, son of anotjer of the same name and Engrácia Rosa, both of S. José. These folks might be related to yours. Its worth a shot. Maybe you should search in S. Pedro. Good luck! I wish I could be of more help.
I also have: Mariana Inácia, married in S. José de Ponta Delgada on 10 Aug 1794 to José Luís, son of António de Lima e Felícia de St.ª Ana.

Dear Theresa:
Well, I was at the FHC at 9am. until 3 and mot of that time I was looking for Francisco and Marianna's marriage certificate. Since I had her birth year, 1778, I started looking even at her being 14 when she married all the way until 1803. But, that was the birth year April 1803 of their son Antonio, so I didn't look after 1803.
The process I followed was to look through each certificate for the words "filho de or filha de." In this tedious process, I found that Marianna had a sister named Maria Antonia who married Vicente Lopez 20 October 1793.
This Maria Antonia was born around 1773. Marianna was born 1778 A N D I also found a brother in the baptisms microfilm named Jose. " filho de Antonio de Lima, natural de Senhora das Neves da Revla, e de sua mulher felicia de "jElle? natural desta igresia...naceu 20 Mayo 1771. (I noticed they didn't say the mother's name as Felicianna but I think it's the correct person.)
Jose was the oldest in 1771
Maria Antonia, abt 1793
Marianna, 1778
I am very concerned that I can't find the marriage certificate of Francisco and Marianna in the Sao Jose records and am wondering where to go from here. Could it be Sao Sebastian?
Thanks for all your help,
