Hi all! I was posting here for a couple months in later 2007 and early 2008 before I dropped off the face of the earth. Those of you who were around might remember the whole issue with the census taker skipping my grandmother's house along with my other problem of my g- grandfather's name being Manuel Silva. (actually I have to go back and find what I wrote, I lost my papers!)
Anyway, as luck would have it, an administrator for a surname DNA project that I had been in contact with for my mother's side of the family went so far as to find my number in the white pages when he couldn't email me (I switched providers and now have a gmail address), and so I clued in on the DNA test sale that is going on. So, a couple nights ago I ordered the kit to test my dad. Unfortunately, his dad's family is Madeiran, so I can't get detailed info for my Azoran ancestors, but I am still having him do the MtDNA test along with the Y-DNA. Maybe I'll get lucky and have island hoppers on the paternal line, but hopefully the mitochondrial dna will have some use as well. I am working on finding my grandmother's niece, who might have some info of her own, and should be able to get me the contact information for one of her brothers who I will then contact and say "Hi, I don't know if you were aware I exist, but I'm your cousin's daughter and I would really like a sample of your DNA, would you kindly lend me some cheek cells?"...well, I won't actually say that, but I'll be thinking it! Anyway, I'm really excited to get back into my research! I am also planning on taking private Portuguese lessons soon, here in Tampa, the Brazilian dialect is my only option, but it's better than nothing right? Hopefully, I'll get a strong grasp of the language and be able to take a trip to the islands. It won't be soon, I won't graduate for another year and a half, but I'm going into a profession with summers off, so I'll be saving my pennies! Also, I plan to take a trip to New Bedford at some point, does anybody have a suggestion of a good time of year to do that, weather-wise? I don't know what the weather is like up there, does it ever get really hot and humid? I'd want to avoid that since I live with that weather most of the year, but I also don't wanna risk getting caught in a cold snap. I'm Floridian, I'd freeze! Thanks for bearing with my long post! I really appreciate everything the group did for me back when I first started posting, and hopefully I'll be able to help out more too!
