I am not really sure; however, I think anything after the time the LDS filmed the records in the archives (sometime in the 1980's) until 100 years ago (give or take a few years). I can't find one of Bob's grandmothers born (maybe) 1885 in Lomba da Santa Barbara in the films. (Can't find her yet, in the archives either). I have only looked in 2 villages so she may be in the next one I search. Anyway, they are not on film since I think Sao Miguel ends about 1883. Baptisms from then until about 1906-7or8 are in the archives and not filmed. Sometimes it takes a year, sometimes more for the books to make it from the Civil Registry to the archive. In theory, events more than 100 years old are in the archives. It probably has to do when the books begin and end. They don't always begin a new book at the beginning of the year and sometimes one book does not complete the year. I am just guessing, but nothing makes sense to me in so many things about Azorean records! My take on your going to the Azores or Salt Lake City is take the Azores. You can always do Utah anytime. I went to the continent of Portugal twice before I went to the Azores. In hindsight, I wish I had done the Azores everytime I went. I guess it has to do with walking, seeing and visiting the places my grandmother knew and the things she told me that made the experience so meaningful for me. Even though I did not know Bob's grandparents well, visiting their birth places allowed me to write about what I saw and experienced so my descendents will have information about their ancestors. I am so happy I have had the opportunity to do more than just the book/film research. Looking at the walls behind the house where my grandmother was born and remembering her talk about jumping the walls to avoid going to school just made her as a child alive to me. Looking out to the water and knowing that she looked out from the balcony of the house at the same view still gives me a thrill, just remembering it. Take the Azores, if you have the opportunity. You might find someone who can tell you where the circus performed in days gone by and you can stand and see things that are still there and were there when your ancestors were performing. I think that would be one of the first questions I would have were I in your shoes. Who would know about the circus of old and who would know where they camped? That would be my first 2 questions to everyone I met on any of the islands. Celeste

Naturally, I want to go to the Azores (with a side trip to Ireland and Scotland). Still trying to get something worked out for late Sept., early Oct. BUT, my husband has offered to take me to Salt Lake City for a week or however long I want to stay to do research just in case my Azores plans fall through. SO...what records would I find at the Archives in the Azores that I would not find at FHC in Salt Lake? Thanks.
