Possibly to obtain a passport(s). And possibly to verify legitimacy of a marriage and to determine grandparents because some records required the naming of grandparents, so the priest had to find the parents marriage and the names of the grandparents. In some cases it is for dispensation of assets or inheritance. In others it is because one of the spouses died and is about to remarry, which is not the case in this instance.
