Hi Lynne,

Are you speaking of Portugal the continent, or the Azores the autonomous
region of Portugal? That will help us direct your better.

I think going through the list of churches will be too much. I haven't
counted, but I think there's probably about 150 churches in the Azores and
more than that on the continent.

Since your Portuguese ancestors were Catholic, you want the baptisms.

Ultimately, you need to find the village your ancestors came from in the
Azores or Portugal. If you can't find the village, but can get down to the
region, then you can search church by church as you may only have a couple
of dozen of churches to search. You'll need to exhaust all records in
Australia that might even hint at where your ancestors were from. See if
you can get a photocopy of the marriage out of the marriage book. If the
book is too old and fragile from 1856, as for a literal transcription, even
if it is in Latin. Here in the USA, it helps if we send a donation when
asking them for the info.

Although this is written from a U.S. point-of-view, you may get other ideas
of where to start: http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/HowTo.html

Cheri Mello
