I find your Isaac Machado Lima, as you say, coming to the US 13 Jun 1912, ship Roma, and he is from CInco RIbeiras Terceira and came into Providence going to his brother Francisco M. Lima in Alameda CA. I find his WWI Draft Registration Card June 5, 1917 and he is living in Gridley, CA. He is born Feb. 16, 1896, from Terceira, single. So if he married in Oct. 1917, in NB, he must have left CA shortly after registering. I find him in the 1919 NB directory living at 89 SWIFT St. I do not see him in the NB 1925 or 1928 directories. Still trying to find them on the 1920 census since you say both children were born in NB 1919 and 1921 so he should be there in 1920. Doesn't look like he was in NB very long.
