I've hit an impasse in a piece of translation of Frutuoso's "Saudades da Terra" that I hope those of you who are fluent in Portuguese can help to resolve. Here is the portuguese passage from the book followed by attempt to translate it into english.
Antes da subversão de Franca, houve um Tomé Vaz Pacheco, desta progénia dos Pachecos, homem rico e de muita autoridade, morador entre o lugar do Porto Formoso e a Maia, termos da Vila Franca, o qual, mandando lavrar suas terras, que ali tinha, um dos bois, que lavrava, lançou a lingua fora com a arreigada, e logo acabando de dar dois ou três regos, acabou de morrer: e vendo este acontecimento, por a todas ser coisa nova, o dito Tom... After the destruction of Vila Franca, there was a man of great wealth and authority, Tomé Vaz Pacheco progeny/descendent of the Pachecos, who lived in a place between Porto Formso and Maia within the boundaries/city limits of Vila Franca, of which demanding the cultivation, that he had there, one of the oxen, that was plowing, lançou a lingua fora com a arreigada, Vila and soon/later finishing of to give two or three furrows, died: witnessing this event, because it was all so new, the said Tomé...
