Hi Penny,

I'm pretty sure all of us had to go through some tattered and stained pages
with the bleed through. Worm holes too. Wait until you see the ones with
the "wash" to enhance the image. It films black.

The original books are written on a type of linen paper. The ink they used
had iron in it. Put that together and you have bleed through. If you can
find a yellow transparency (I see them at genealogy conferences) or even a
piece of goldenrod copy paper and you put that on the film reader it will
help a little bit.

Another thing...the Azorean films were filmed at whatever magnification. In
order to read them, you need to tell the workers that you need the 42 power
lens. They will switch out the lens to the next higher level. Once you get
the higher power lens, your FHC may have the capability for you to copy the
record(s) onto a USB drive device. You are dealing with an unusual name so
you only have to focus on the names in the margin. Once you think you may
have found him, you can take the image home and upload it to the group.
After a little practice, you'll be translating these things yourself. Many
people on this list have very little knowledge of the Portuguese language,
but have learned to sort of read the records.

If you live somewhat close to either the Oakland, CA or N.Dartmouth, MA
FHCs, it might be worth the drive to go there to get live assistance from
someone to help you read the records. If that is too daunting, a list of
researchers for hire can be found here:
http://homepage.mac.com/kmacardoza/Genealogy/azoresindex.html#researchers
It's up to you though to check out their rates and references.

Cheri
