My great grandfather was here for 17 years before he "sent for" my great grandmother, who was born the year before he left Sao Jorge. She was also from Sao Jorge, but a different village. There is no evidence that the families knew each other. I think Great Grandfather may have become acquainted with her sisters' families here in California-- perhaps worked alongside their husbands--and that's how the connection was made.
Great Grandmother's brother, also here in California, married a much younger woman in 1900--we just recently found out about that one so I don't think they were married very long. We don't know where she was from besides the Azores. When he was older he returned to his native village and found a wife and brought her back to the US. One of Great Grandfather's brothers returned to Sao Jorge when he had the money and brought back his childhood sweetheart as a bride. There's no clear trend, but I think where there was a population of Azoreans (like here in California) they may have more often married within the culture.
