Piques is French. It is derived from Piqué; a type of cotton fabric that is weaved in piques, but it also means a certain "state" of mind, angry, upset, irritated. During the French revolution the group of revolutionaries that secured Marie Antoinette were called the "Piques Section". There is also a certain type of intricate gold jewellery work that is called Pique. Cheers, Margaret.
