After spending days, hours, researching Horacio de Souza e Silva and his wife Rita aka Horace & Rita Souza, Fall River. I think I have come to the end of the line on this one. I have traced them through all censuses, ship's manifests, WWI records, found their children, only to see their records end with the 1932 Fall River Directory. Either they moved but I have found no evidence of this, or they both died between 1932-33, which seems rather doubtful as they were only 48 and 53 years old. Rather, I have a feeling that they returned to mainland Portugal where he was from or to Faial, Azores where she was from since I do not find them in further US research. I do not know what happened to their children as they appear in and out of census records. One was living near them and remained in Fall River until 1936 directory, so either she married, or she, too, returned abroad. However, I have been able to trace Rita's daughter from her first marriage as she remained in this country and also her children. I did find her obit on Diario Noticias but there is nothing of help there so I have sent to the Fall River Library hoping their local newspaper has a more in depth obituary and that it might make mention her parents.
However, there is one glimmer? of hope. The 1930 census for naturalization says PA which means first papers-declaration of intention. I have written NARA to find out if these records would be available if they did not complete the naturalization process. Anyone ever applied for these PA records? My guess is that if they returned overseas, and I am not sure to where, my search for them has ended as there are no US records for these returnees? My hope in researching Horacio was to find out what happened to his brother Antonio who previously returned to Portugal and did not return to the US. I am hoping his wife's 2nd marriage in the US will at least tell me if she was divorced or widowed and I am working on this also. 3 steps forward, 2 steps back.
