Mary Ann, I don't know what you mean by being in Ponta Delgada in years. It used to be on a street called Rua do Ernesto do Canto. They moved to up to the north, near a jardim (jardin? - garden) next to the old Jesuit college. The address that I have for the "Biblioteca Pública e Arquivo de Ponta Delgada" is on Rua Largo Colegio. I would think any taxi driver could find it. It sort of looks like it has a glass atrium on top. If I remember right, the archives are on the top floor. It's on a corner. To the right is an old, dark colored stone Jesuit college. I don't know why I think Jesuit. I could be another Catholic order.
The last time I stayed in S.Miguel, I stayed in a residential. I think it was called "Residental de Sao Miguel," but I'm not sure. The price wasn't bad. I had my own bath. It was more budget like - you could think of it as a Portuguese Motel 6, I suppose. In the mornings, they had "pequeno almoço" which was more like cheese and crackers for breakfast. I don't drink coffee, so I don't remember what they had to drink. I found a "Coca-Cola Light" or "Pepsi-Light" on my way there. I could walk to the biblioteca, so it wasn't that far. I know I saw something like a Days Inn or Comfort Inn or something like that. Also, they have the larger hotels that are more resort like, as well, if that suits you.
